The Osun Open Local Government Project (OsunOpenLG) has celebrated its second anniversary with a renewed commitment to strengthening transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in local governance across Osun State.
In a statement released to commemorate the milestone, the Executive Director of Insight Initiative for Community and Social Development (IICSD), Jare Tiamiyu, described the past two years as a period of impactful reforms, civic innovation, and sustained advocacy for open governance at the grassroots level.
Officially launched on May 24, 2024, with the support of the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF), OsunOpenLG was established to improve openness and governance systems within local government administration. According to the statement, the initiative has continued to expand conversations around access to information, good governance practices, and inclusive citizen engagement in local communities.
A major highlight of the project’s achievements is the development of what has been described as Nigeria’s first Artificial Intelligence ChatBot dedicated to open governance issues at the local government level. The innovation was designed to improve public access to governance information, simplify interactions around accountability mechanisms, and encourage citizens’ participation in governance processes.
The organisation noted that the AI-powered platform demonstrates the growing potential of technology-driven solutions in advancing transparency and civic engagement within Nigeria’s governance space.
“As we celebrate this important milestone, this anniversary edition serves not only as an opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments so far, but also to reflect on the journey ahead,” the statement read.
The group further stated that the successes recorded over the past two years have reinforced its belief that sustainable grassroots development can only thrive in an environment where governance remains transparent, inclusive, participatory, and accountable.
Looking ahead, OsunOpenLG pledged to deepen its impact through innovative solutions, stronger partnerships, and citizen-focused initiatives aimed at improving governance outcomes at the local level.
The statement was signed by Jare Tiamiyu, Executive Director of the Insight Initiative for Community and Social Development (IICSD).
The anniversary celebration has also sparked conversations among civic actors and governance advocates on the importance of technology, transparency, and youth-driven initiatives in strengthening democratic governance in Nigeria.
