The Federal Government has approved a significant increase in peculiar allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants, in a move aimed at improving take-home pay, boosting morale, and strengthening service delivery across the public sector.
The announcement was made on Friday, 24th April,2026 in Abuja by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, during a press briefing outlining ongoing reform initiatives within the federal civil service.
According to her, the reviewed package covers workers under key salary structures, including the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS).
A major highlight of the reform is the approval of full Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for civil servants attending official training programmes in Abuja, even where no inter-state travel is involved, a departure from previous practice.
The government also approved upward reviews of other allowances such as estacode and book allowances, alongside enhanced welfare measures designed to improve working conditions and overall productivity in the service.
In addition, the new package introduces a strengthened employee compensation framework, providing better support in cases of work-related injury or death. A housing loan scheme valued at ₦10 billion has also been unveiled to improve access to affordable housing for federal workers.
Speaking on the rationale behind the reforms, Walson-Jack said the measures align with the administration’s vision of building a “world-class civil service for accelerated national development,” adding that ongoing digital transformation and institutional reforms are central to achieving that goal.
The development has been widely welcomed within the civil service, with many workers expressing optimism that the enhanced welfare package will translate into improved performance and renewed commitment to national service.
The latest policy shift marks one of the most comprehensive welfare-focused reforms in recent years within Nigeria’s federal civil service.
