The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State Chapter, Hon. Idowu Abiodun, has said that improved local government autonomy is driving impactful grassroots security interventions, as councils across the state distributed motorcycles to security agencies.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Abiodun noted that the initiative underscores the commitment of local governments to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that security remains the foundation for sustainable development in any society.
“This event is not just about the handing over of equipment; it is a clear demonstration of our unwavering commitment to the safety, security, and well-being of our people,” he said.
The ALGON Chairman explained that the motorcycles would significantly enhance the operational capacity of security agencies, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas, by improving mobility and response time. He added that the move is aimed at strengthening community policing and ensuring no part of the state is left vulnerable.
Hon. Abiodun attributed the success of the initiative to the growing financial and administrative independence of local governments, stressing that autonomy has enabled councils to respond swiftly to local challenges.
“Autonomy allows us to design solutions tailored to our realities and to act without undue delay. What we are witnessing today is a clear testament to what can be achieved when governance is brought closer to the grassroots,” he stated.
He further emphasized that the development reflects the broader impact of local government reforms, praising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the push for full local government autonomy in Nigeria.
While commending the efforts and sacrifices of security personnel, Abiodun described the motorcycles as a token of appreciation for their dedication and service. He urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the equipment in protecting lives and maintaining peace across communities.
The ALGON Chairman also disclosed that additional security equipment and vehicles have been procured and would be distributed to security agencies in the coming weeks.
He called on residents of Osun State to support security efforts by remaining vigilant and providing timely information to law enforcement agencies, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.
Reaffirming the commitment of local government leaders, Abiodun pledged continued investment in initiatives that promote peace, safety, and development at the grassroots level.
The event marks a significant step in Osun State’s efforts to strengthen its security architecture through collaborative governance and community-focused interventions.
