The former Governor of Lagos State and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has been appointed a Bencher of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the legal profession and public service.

His appointment into the Body of Benchers, the highest governing institution of the legal profession in Nigeria, places him among an elite group of distinguished jurists and senior legal practitioners entrusted with upholding the ethics and standards of the Bar.

Fashola, who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988 and later elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has built a remarkable career spanning law, governance, and national development. He served as Governor of Lagos State from 2007 to 2015, where he earned widespread acclaim for infrastructural transformation and public sector reforms.

Having completed his tenure as governor, he was appointed Minister of Power, Works and Housing under President Muhammadu Buhari, a position he held from 2015 to 2023, playing a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s infrastructure and energy policies.

The Body of Benchers is responsible for the formal call to the Bar, as well as the discipline of legal practitioners and the maintenance of professional standards within the legal system. Membership is considered one of the highest honours in Nigeria’s legal community.

Legal analysts and stakeholders have described Fashola’s elevation as well-deserved, noting that it reflects his decades of dedication, integrity, and impact both in the courtroom and in public office.

With this latest recognition, Fashola further solidifies his legacy as one of Nigeria’s most influential legal minds and public servants.
