The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially cleared the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, of allegations that he forged his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.
The police said investigations found no evidence of forgery, falsification, alteration, or unlawful issuance of the certificate attributed to the minister.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that the police carried out an extensive probe into the allegations after a petition was submitted to the Inspector-General of Police.
According to him, investigators carefully reviewed documentary evidence, statements, and official records before arriving at their conclusion.
“After an exhaustive investigation into the allegations, it has been established that there is no evidence whatsoever of forgery, alteration, falsification or unlawful production of the minister’s NYSC certificate,” Hundeyin said.
He added that the National Youth Service Corps authorities were contacted during the investigation, and the organisation confirmed that the certificate was valid and duly issued to the minister.
He said the controversy surrounding Tunji-Ojo’s credentials began after a civil society organisation submitted a petition alleging irregularities in the minister’s NYSC records and calling for an investigation.
However, police findings revealed that the minister was initially mobilised for national service in 2006 but could not complete the programme at the time due to verified medical reasons. He was later remobilised in 2019 in line with NYSC regulations, completed the service and was subsequently issued the certificate.
The development comes months after the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) also authenticated Tunji-Ojo’s WASSCE result, which had earlier been questioned by critics.
With the latest police report confirming the authenticity of his NYSC certificate, authorities say the allegations against the interior minister are unfounded.
