In a development that has reignited debate over police conduct and accountability, the Lagos State Police Command has launched an official investigation into the actions of four policemen, attached to the Area H Police Command in Ogudu, following revelations that they extorted $2,000 (about ₦3.3 million) from a couple on December 18, 2025.

The case first gained public attention after the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) reported that the officers had unlawfully arrested the couple and demanded payment into a cryptocurrency wallet generated by the officers themselves.

Initially, the officers refunded ₦2.2 million, claiming that ₦1 million of the extorted funds had already been shared amongst several policemen and they could only return part of the money.

However, following intense public scrutiny and widespread social media coverage, the remaining ₦1.1 million was returned in full, with the balance transferred directly into an account belonging to a friend of the couple who had assisted in reporting the matter.

In response to the exposure of the incident, the Lagos State Police Command has commenced a formal probe into the conduct of the officers involved. On Monday, January 5, 2026, one of the police team leaders, identified during the refund process, was reportedly seen breaking down in tears at the police headquarters in Ikeja, pleading with the complainant to drop the matter.

During this interaction, the Lagos Police spokesperson intervened, ensuring the meeting remained professional as the complainant lodged his official statement.

While disciplinary outcomes have not yet been publicly disclosed, this case has highlighted ongoing concerns about corruption and extortion within parts of the Nigeria Police Force. It has also underscored the role of the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU) in handling citizen grievances and securing restitution when misconduct is exposed.

The Lagos command’s response to this incident comes amidst a broader push within the force to curb unprofessional conduct and reassure the public of reforms. In recent months, senior police leadership has publicly warned officers against extortion, harassment, and rights violations, emphasizing that such behavior will not be tolerated.
