Nigeria’s Super Eagles have reignited their World Cup hopes in spectacular way, defeating Gabon 4–1 after extra time in a pulsating 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoff clash on Thursday night.

The high-stakes encounter, which had the nation on edge, lived up to its billing, a contest of grit, drama, and redemption.

After a cagey first half, Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 78th minute through Victor Osimhen, whose well-timed finish sent fans into frenzy. But the joy was short-lived as Gabon clawed back with a dramatic equaliser in the 89th minute, silencing the Super Eagles’ supporters and forcing the game into extra time.

What followed was a statement of intent from the three-time African champions. Nigeria unleashed an attacking masterclass in the added 30 minutes, with goals from Ademola Lookman, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Samuel Chukwueze, to secure an emphatic 4–1 victory.

The result not only seen Nigeria through to the next phase of the tournament, but also restored faith in the team following days of controversy over unpaid bonuses that had threatened their preparation.

Head coach, Finidi George hailed his players’ resilience after the final whistle, describing the win as “a victory for unity, discipline, and belief.”

“The boys showed character when it mattered most. This is the Nigeria we all want to see, focused and fearless,” he added.

With the victory, Nigeria move one step closer to booking their ticket to the 2026 World Cup, rekindle hopes of a return to football’s grandest stage after missing out in 2022.

For fans across the country, Thursday night was more than a win, it was a reminder that the Super Eagles can still fly when the stakes are high.
