Over 100 members of the Omoluabi Progressive Group, led by former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and several Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyalists have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State.
This significant shift in the state’s political landscape occurred during a reception organized by the APC in Ejigbo Local Government Area, boosting the party’s prospects ahead of the 2026 governorship election ¹.
PDP defector leader, Hon. Kareem Mubarak, cited poor governance and lack of internal democracy within the PDP as reasons for their exit.
The Omoluabi Progressive Group defector leader, Hon. Wole Olajire, stated that their decision to rejoin the APC was driven by a desire for a more stable and focused structure.
APC Apex Leader in Ejigbo, Senator Mudashiru Husain, assured the defectors of inclusivity and fairness within the party structure.
He expressed delight at the growing strength of the party, despite being in opposition at the state level, and highlighted the party’s track record of social welfare, economic transformation, and human capital development.
The defection is seen as a significant boost for APC’s prospects in the 2026 electoral contest.
The PDP is facing challenges, including internal conflicts and allegations of poor governance, which may impact their chances in the upcoming election.
