The ongoing investigation into the abduction of school pupils in Oyo State has taken a dramatic turn following the arrest of six suspects allegedly linked to the deadly operation that claimed the lives of two teachers and an okada rider in Ahoro-Esiele community.
Security authorities disclosed that the suspects were apprehended during coordinated operations involving the police, the Nigerian Army, Amotekun Corps, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Agro-Rangers.
According to investigators, preliminary findings revealed that some of the suspects were allegedly in constant phone communication with the kidnappers during and after the attack, raising fresh concerns over the growing role of informants in violent crimes across rural communities.
Police sources said call records and intelligence gathering reportedly exposed movement routes used by the kidnappers through the National Park area as well as suspected hideouts where the victims may have been held.
The tragic incident, which shocked residents of Oriire Local Government Area and surrounding communities, involved the abduction of school children while two teachers and a commercial motorcycle rider were reportedly killed during the attack.
The development has heightened fears amongst residents, many of whom now believe that criminal gangs often rely on local collaborators to obtain sensitive information, monitor security movements, and identify vulnerable targets.
Speaking further on the development, authorities assured residents that investigations were still ongoing and hinted that more arrests could follow as security agencies intensify efforts to dismantle the network behind the operation.
Community leaders and security observers have meanwhile called for increased vigilance, urging residents to promptly report suspicious activities and unfamiliar movements within their areas.
The incident has once again reignited national conversations about insecurity, especially in rural communities bordering forests and isolated routes frequently exploited by kidnappers and armed gangs.
Security experts say tackling informant networks may become a critical step in weakening criminal operations, as insider collaboration often provides kidnappers with intelligence, logistics support, and escape routes.
Residents of the affected communities have continued to mourn the slain victims while demanding stronger security presence and swift prosecution of anyone found culpable in the attack.
