The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers implicated in the fatal shooting of a civilian, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, in a move aimed at reinforcing accountability within the Force.
The directive followed the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings conducted at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, after the officers involved were withdrawn from Delta State on the orders of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
Findings by the Force Disciplinary Committee revealed that the principal officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, acted in clear violation of established rules governing the use of firearms. The committee subsequently recommended his dismissal alongside other officers found culpable in the incident.
Police authorities confirmed that the recommendations have been approved by the IGP and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final ratification, in line with due process.
Upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers are expected to be handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
The incident, which sparked public outrage, has drawn renewed attention to concerns over excessive use of force by security personnel. In response, the police leadership reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions and misconduct.
The IGP extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring that justice would be served and reaffirming the Force’s commitment to protecting the rights and safety of citizens.
The Nigeria Police Force added that it remains determined to uphold professionalism and discipline among its ranks, warning that any officer found wanting will face the full weight of the law.
