The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has called for strategic collaboration with development partners to strengthen disability data management in Nigeria, as part of efforts to promote inclusive policies and improve the lives of persons with disabilities.
The Commission said the initiative, driven by its Planning, Research and Statistics Department, aims to conduct a comprehensive situational analysis of disability data management systems across the country.
Executive Secretary of the NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, emphasized that reliable and accurate disability data is critical for effective policy formulation, programme design, and the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in national development frameworks.
According to him, the proposed situational analysis will help identify existing gaps in data collection, coordination, and management within the disability sector.
Gufwan noted that strengthening the data ecosystem would enhance evidence-based policymaking and ensure that interventions targeted at persons with disabilities are better informed and more impactful.
The Commission also called on international development organizations and partners to support the initiative. Among those identified for potential collaboration are Sightsavers, CBM Global Disability Inclusion, and agencies within the United Nations system.
NCPWD explained that the collaboration would help build institutional capacity, improve coordination among stakeholders, and develop a unified framework for disability data management in Nigeria.
The Commission further stated that improved data systems would support stronger advocacy and more effective implementation of policies and programmes aimed at advancing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.
Ultimately, the initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s disability inclusion agenda and ensure that persons with disabilities are not left behind in national development efforts.
