The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Osun State, has dismissed as false and misleading allegations circulating on social media that underage persons were registered as voters at the INEC office in Ede North Local Government Area.
In a Press Release on Monday, February 9, 2026, the Commission reacted to a Facebook post alleging that students dressed in school uniforms were registered as voters at the Ede North INEC office on Friday, February 6, 2026.
INEC clarified that while some students of YTD Grammar School, Ojoro Ede, were brought to the INEC Ede North Local Government Office on the said date with the intention of registering, no underage person was registered.
According to the Commission, the Electoral Officer and other officials on duty, acting in strict compliance with the law, denied the students entry into the premises upon discovering they were underage.
“The allegation is completely false and misleading,” INEC stated, stressing that its officials adhered strictly to constitutional and legal provisions governing voter registration.
The Commission reiterated that, in line with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022, only Nigerian citizens who have attained the age of 18 years are eligible for voter registration.
INEC further assured residents of Osun State that the Commission, under the leadership of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, would not engage in or condone any act capable of undermining the credibility and integrity of the voter registration process.
The electoral body urged members of the public to disregard the viral social media post and rely solely on official INEC Osun State communication channels for accurate and verified information.
INEC also called on parents, guardians, school authorities, and community leaders to support its efforts by educating young persons on the legal requirements for voter registration.
