Nigerian security forces have scored a major victory in the fight against terrorism with the arrest of Shariff Umar, also known as “Yusuf,” identified as the chief coordinator of a Boko Haram suicide bombing network operating in the Northeast.

The breakthrough came after an intelligence-led cordon and search operation by troops of Joint Task Force, North East Operation, HADIN KAI in the Kalmari area of Maiduguri on December 31, 2025, during which 14 suspects linked to suicide bombing activities were taken into custody.

According to a statement by Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for the task force, continued questioning and corroborated intelligence revealed Umar as the principal coordinator responsible for recruiting, preparing and dispatching suicide bombers, as well as managing logistics and delivery of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

A key detained suspect, Ibrahim Muhammad, identified Umar as the mastermind behind the Gamboru Market Mosque bombing on December 24, 2025, which left scores dead and injured worshippers during evening prayers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Security sources say Umar was also linked to a foiled suicide attack in Damaturu and that further probes are uncovering deeper network connections, including alleged involvement of individuals close to him. All suspects remain in custody pending further investigation.

Military officials described the arrest as a “critical breakthrough” in ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the Northeast and an affirmation of the value of intelligence-driven action in dismantling terror cells that have terrorised communities for years.
