The University of Maiduguri has been officially renamed Muhammadu Buhari University in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made the announcement on July 17, 2025, during a special session of the Federal Executive Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The university will henceforth be known as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri.

The renaming is a symbolic tribute to Buhari’s legacy and historical connection to the region, particularly his efforts in stabilizing the North-East region and promoting educational development.

President Tinubu described Buhari as “a good man, a decent man, an honorable man” whose legacy of discipline, patriotism, and moral uprightness will endure for generations.

Buhari’s son, Yusuf, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, the Federal Executive Council, parliamentarians, and Nigerians for their condolences and contributions since his father’s demise. He described his late father as someone who loved more as a friend than a politician.
