The World Bank has appointed Mathew Verghis as its new Country Director for Nigeria, effective July 1, 2025. Verghis succeeds Dr. Ndiame Diop, who has taken on a new role within the institution.
An Indian national with over 20 years of experience in economic policy and development, Verghis joined the World Bank in 1999 and has worked in senior leadership roles across Africa, East Asia, Europe, and Central Asia.
Verghis most recently served as Regional Practice Director for Prosperity in the South Asia Region, based in Washington, D.C.
As Country Director, Verghis will oversee the World Bank’s engagement in Nigeria, focusing on development initiatives that foster economic growth, reduce poverty, and strengthen resilience.
His role will involve deepening collaboration with government agencies, civil society organizations, and other development partners to advance shared goals.
Verghis expressed his excitement to work with the government and people of Nigeria, highlighting the potential for transformative growth that can improve lives, create jobs, and expand opportunities for all.
