The Super Eagles of Nigeria were forced to a 1-1 draw by the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a tense World Cup qualifier at the Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein, today Tuesday, 9th September, 2025.
Nigeria, desperate for maximum points to revive their qualification campaign, found themselves behind in the first half after captain William Troost-Ekong mistakenly diverted the ball into his own net, gifting the hosts the lead.
However, Fulham defender Calvin Bassey rose highest to power home a header before halftime, restoring parity and giving the Super Eagles hope.
South Africa, who is leading Group C, were looking to extend their advantage, while Nigeria’s chase for a World Cup ticket remains precarious with the dropped points.
The result leaves the Super Eagles, needing strong performances in their remaining matches to stand a chance of securing qualification.
