President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the United Nations to undertake far-reaching reforms to restore its global relevance, warning that the world body risks being sidelined if it continues to lag behind fast-moving global events.
Delivering Nigeria’s policy proposal at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Tinubu who was represented by the Nigeria Vice President, Kashim Shettima, said the UN’s credibility is being eroded by the widening gulf between its declarations and its concrete actions.
He positioned Nigeria’s ongoing economic transformation as a model for other developing nations, stressing that inclusive growth, innovation, and resilience must guide international development agendas.
Going further, he called for radical restructuring of the global financial architecture, advocating new mechanisms to tackle the sovereign debt crisis that continues to stifle growth in developing economies.
“The United Nations must either embrace sweeping reforms to reflect today’s realities or risk irrelevance in a rapidly evolving world order,” Tinubu declared, saying Nigeria is ready to play a leading role in shaping the future of multilateral cooperation.
