Residents of Ira, Inaja, Aho and surrounding communities in Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State have been thrown into anxiety following an alleged threat letter warning of a planned terrorist attack in the area.
The alarm was formally raised in an open letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by former presidential candidate, Princess Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, an indigene of Ira.
According to the letter, a document reportedly dropped at the Ira Market area was discovered by residents and allegedly signed by a group identifying itself as “NTA, Nigeria Terrorist Association.”
The purported message claimed that members of the group had moved from the Kaiama axis into Oyun LGA with the intention of attacking Ira town, Inaja community, Aho village and other surrounding settlements
The development has reportedly caused panic among residents, with traders, farmers and families expressing fear over their safety. Community members are said to be calling for urgent federal intervention to forestall any possible attack.
Ira is described as a strategic border town linking several rural communities and farmland corridors within Kwara State. The area connects westward through Ilemona and extends toward Inaja and Aho, making it a transit route that security analysts say could be vulnerable to infiltration if not properly monitored.
The open letter warned that any successful attack in the axis could lead to displacement, economic disruption, and heightened tensions in a state widely known as the “State of Harmony.”
While commending the Nigerian Army’s Forward Operation Base (FOB) in Ilemona for ongoing patrol and security efforts, the former presidential candidate stressed that reinforcement is necessary in light of the alleged expanding threat.
Princess Adesanya-Davies called for Deployment of rapid response security teams to affected communities, Intelligence verification of the alleged threat letter, Strengthening of the Army’s FOB in Ilemona with more personnel and logistics, Surveillance operations and forest security sweeps and Enhanced protection for markets, schools and entry points
She therefore appeal to Federal and State governments, stressing that the copies of the letter have been sent to key security and government officials, including the DSS, the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief of Defence Staff, the National Security Adviser, the Governor of Kwara State and the Senate President.
The appeal urged both federal and state authorities to treat the matter with urgency and prevent what was described as a “potentially preventable tragedy.”
However, the security agencies had not issued an official statement confirming the authenticity of the alleged threat letter. The residents confirmed that vigilance has increased in parts of Oyun LGA. Community leaders have called for calm while urging security agencies to conduct thorough investigations.
Observers note that early security alerts, if properly handled, can help prevent crises and reinforce public confidence in national safety mechanisms.
The situation remains under watch as residents await official confirmation and further security updates.
