The Nigerian Senate has urged President Bola Tinubu to approve a 200 million naira compensation for the family of two-year-old Onosereba Omhonria, who was killed during a botched drug raid by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Delta State on July 13, 2023.

The Senate also mandated the NDLEA to continue funding the medical treatment of Onosereba’s younger brother, Eromonsele, who was critically injured in the eye during the raid.

The NDLEA officers stormed Abacha Junction in Okpanam, Asaba, Oshimili North Local Government Area, resulting in Onosereba’s death and Eromonsele’s injury.

The Senate is seeking an additional 200 million naira compensation, considering the NDLEA has already provided 25 million naira as interim support.

Eromonsele requires advanced medical care abroad, which the NDLEA lacks the resources to fund.

Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Godswill Akpabio expressed condolences and emphasized the need for accountability in law enforcement operations.

While expressing his condolence to the family of the deceased, Adams Oshiomhole said “No amount of money can compensate for the life of a child. The uniform should not be a license to kill and return home to sleep peacefully with your own children.”

“Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased and the little boy still fighting to recover. Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done” the Senate President expressed.
