The Oyo State Football Association has paid a condolence visit to the family of late Nigerian football legend Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, who died on Monday, March 9, 2026, at the age of 88.
The delegation, led by the Chairman of the association, James Odeniran, visited the residence of the revered tactician to commiserate with his family and honour his immense contributions to football development in Oyo State and Nigeria.
Members of the association’s executive committee accompanied the chairman on the visit, including Vice Chairman, Comrade Isaac Ayangbile; Alhaji Azeez; Mogaji Rotimi Ali, Esq.; Mr. Michael Oladeni; and the association’s Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Adesola. Also present was former Chairman of the Oyo State Sports Council and former Executive Chairman of Ibadan North East Local Government, Gbenga Adewusi, popularly known as “Arole.”
On arrival at the residence, the delegation first signed the condolence register in honour of the late coach. In his message, Odeniran paid glowing tribute to Onigbinde, describing him as a man whose passion for football development left an enduring legacy.
“Baba, you were passionate about football development. Your enormous contribution to football in Oyo State and Nigeria in general will never be forgotten. We will continue to celebrate you and your enduring legacy at the Oyo State Football Association. Rest in peace, Coach,” the message read.
After signing the register, the delegation proceeded to the living room where members of the late coach’s family, including his wife, sons and daughters, received them in a calm and reflective atmosphere.
Addressing the family, Odeniran expressed deep sympathy on behalf of the football community in Oyo State, describing the late Onigbinde as a father figure who dedicated his life to the growth of football in Nigeria.
He noted that the late tactician lived a fulfilled life, serving the nation with honour both at the national and club levels, while mentoring generations of footballers, coaches and administrators.
The Oyo FA chairman also assured the family that the football fraternity would continue to celebrate the life and achievements of the revered coach. He disclosed that the Nigeria Football Federation is expected to send a delegation from Abuja to participate in the burial arrangements once the family announces the funeral programme.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most respected football tacticians, Onigbinde served twice as head coach of the Nigerian national team, the Nigeria national football team, and notably led the side to the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond the national team, he also made significant contributions at club level, particularly with the Shooting Stars Sports Club, where his leadership and wealth of experience helped nurture several generations of talented players.
As tributes continue to pour in from across the football community, many have described the late coach as a symbol of wisdom, discipline and dedication whose legacy will continue to inspire the future of Nigerian football.
