The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is currently probing 18 sitting governors in Nigeria, according to EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede.
He stated this during a sensitization program in Lagos on Friday, July 18, 2025, aimed at educating stakeholders on the ills of naira mutilation and abuse.
Olukoyede emphasized that those found wanting will face the law at the end of their tenure. However, he didn’t disclose the names of the governors being probed or provide further details of the investigation.
Interestingly, Olukoyede shared an anecdote about a former governor who was arrested in the UK for spraying pounds sterling at his birthday party.
This ex-governor was already under EFCC investigation while in office but fled the country just before the expiration of his tenure to avoid arrest.
The EFCC chairman also stressed the importance of respecting the naira, calling it a symbol of Nigeria’s sovereignty.
He urged musicians and entertainers to help educate their fans on the proper handling of the national currency.
