Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has renewed the country’s demand for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), stressing that equitable representation is central to sustaining global peace and security.
This call was made when addressing world leaders at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Shettima said that Nigeria’s demographic weight, economic influence, and longstanding contributions to international peacekeeping missions justify its demand for a permanent position.
“Nigeria must have a permanent seat at the UN Security Council as part of a wider process of institutional reform,” he added, calling for an urgent overhaul of the global body’s governance structures to reflect contemporary realities.
The Vice President reiterated Africa’s growing role in addressing regional and global crises, insisting that reforms are critical for the Security Council to maintain its credibility and effectiveness in safeguarding international stability.
