The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has called for strategic collaboration with development partners to strengthen disability data management in Nigeria as part of efforts to promote evidence-based policymaking and inclusive development.

The call was made during a stakeholders’ engagement convened by the Commission’s Planning, Research and Statistics Department, aimed at initiating a comprehensive situational analysis of disability data systems in the country.

Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, emphasized that reliable and coordinated disability data remains critical for the design and implementation of effective programmes that address the needs of persons with disabilities.

Gufwan noted that accurate data is essential for ensuring that persons with disabilities are adequately captured in national development frameworks and policy planning.

According to him, the proposed situational analysis will examine existing systems for collecting, coordinating, and managing disability data in Nigeria, with the goal of identifying gaps and strengthening institutional capacity.

He said that the initiative will also help develop a coordinated framework for disability data management, which will support improved advocacy, policy formulation, and programme implementation in the disability sector.

The Commission used the opportunity to urge international development organizations and technical partners present at the meeting, including Sightsavers, CBM International, and the United Nations Technical Working Group (TWG) on Disability Inclusion, to collaborate on the initiative.

NCPWD maintained that strengthening disability data systems through partnerships will significantly enhance data-driven decision-making and ultimately improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities across Nigeria.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to build a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities are fully represented in national development efforts.
