The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has pledged strong collaboration with the Africa Inclusive Economy Summit to advance economic empowerment and development opportunities for persons with disabilities across Nigeria and the continent.
Speaking during a strategic meeting with the Summit’s delegation at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja, Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, emphasized that Nigeria, with over 35.5 million citizens living with disabilities, must take the lead in championing inclusive economic growth.
“The world is now a global village. Whether the Summit holds in London, Nigeria, or elsewhere, the most important outcome is the empowerment of persons with disabilities and their full integration into national and continental development, adding that Nigeria must play a pivotal role in shaping this conversation,” Gufwan said.
He lamented that less than 3% of Nigerians with disabilities are in gainful employment, describing it as a “staggering figure” that requires urgent intervention, stressing that economic inclusion is key to sustainable empowerment, as political rights have little meaning without access to jobs, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
The Africa Inclusive Economy Summit, spearheaded by Nigerian-born British innovator His Grace Alexander and coordinated by Dr. Bunmi Kole Dawodu, aims to connect innovators, entrepreneurs, and governments in creating opportunities for persons with disabilities. The 2026 edition is scheduled to take place in London.
In his remark,Dr. Dawodu commended Nigeria’s leadership in disability inclusion, noting that the Summit is a self-sponsored initiative driven by passionate advocates from Africa and the UK.
“This Summit is designed to connect innovators and creators with opportunities that can transform lives. We are delighted that the Commission has assured us of its full support, and we look forward to showcasing Nigerian innovators and leaders at the global stage,” Dawodu said.
Both parties agreed to strengthen collaboration by nominating Nigerian innovators with disabilities to participate in the London Summit, while also exploring the possibility of hosting future editions in Nigeria or other African countries.
The NCPWD reaffirmed its readiness to partner with all stakeholders committed to advancing the rights, empowerment, and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
