An Israeli strike on Gaza’s only Catholic church has killed two people and injured several others, including the parish priest.

The attack, which occurred on July 17, 2025, has been condemned by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Pope.

Report shows two people from the Christian community were killed in the strike while several people were injured, including the parish priest, Father Gabriel Romanelli.

The strike caused significant damage to the Holy Family Compound, which was sheltering around 600 displaced persons, including children and individuals with special needs.

Reacting to this incident, Pope Leo XIV expressed deep sadness over the attack and called for an immediate ceasefire.

The attack was condemned by various international leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

Israel expressed “deep sorrow” over the damage and civilian casualties, stating that the military was investigating the incident.
