The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rescheduled the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election from Saturday, August 8 to Saturday, August 15, 2026.
In a press release issued on February 26, 2026, the Commission’s Osun State office said the decision followed an official directive from its National Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the statement signed by the Public Affairs Officer, Musa Olurode, the adjustment affects only the election date, while activities already conducted under the approved timetable remain valid.
“The Commission hereby notifies the general public, political parties, stakeholders, and the good people of Osun State that the Osun State Governorship Election earlier scheduled for Saturday, 8th August 2026, has been rescheduled to Saturday, 15th August 2026,” the statement read.
INEC explained that the remaining pre-election activities will be implemented strictly in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026. The Commission emphasized that the revised date is consistent with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and relevant electoral laws.
Reassuring stakeholders, INEC stated that the shift does not in any way compromise its commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible, inclusive, and transparent poll.
The Commission in Osun State, under the leadership of Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, called on political parties, candidates, security agencies, the media, civil society organisations, and voters to continue cooperating to ensure a peaceful and credible election.
INEC added that further updates regarding the election would be communicated in due course.
