The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Osun State, on Tuesday, 3rd March, 2026 convened an Expanded Stakeholders’ Meeting ahead of the formal commencement of electioneering campaigns for the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election scheduled for August 15, 2026.
The crucial meeting, held in Osogbo, brought together representatives of political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, the media, and other critical stakeholders, as part of efforts to strengthen collective commitment toward a credible, transparent, and peaceful electoral process.
In his opening remarks, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Osun State, Mutiu Olaleke Agboke, emphasized that the responsibility of delivering a successful election rests not solely on INEC but on all actors in the democratic space.
He noted that all stakeholders are united by a shared goal, ensuring that the forthcoming #OsunDecides2026 reflects the genuine will of the people of Osun State.
“The success of the electoral process depends not only on INEC but also on the responsible conduct of political parties, candidates, supporters, security agencies, and the electorate at large,” the REC stated.
Dr. Agboke stressed that each stakeholder must uphold critical responsibilities within their respective capacities to foster a democratic process anchored on integrity and public trust. He particularly reminded political actors that campaigns must remain issue-based and conducted strictly within the framework of the law.
Highlighting the essence of political campaigns, the REC underscored that rallies and other campaign activities should serve as platforms for educating voters about candidates’ policies, aspirations, and governance plans.
He cautioned against the misuse of campaign grounds for inflammatory rhetoric, misinformation, or actions capable of threatening public peace and security.
According to him, electioneering campaigns are not merely ceremonial displays of strength but constitutionally and legally recognized avenues for presenting policy alternatives and manifestos to the electorate, educating voters about party ideology and governance philosophy, mobilizing lawful support through persuasion and engagement; and strengthening democratic participation and political consciousness.
The Commission further reassured stakeholders of its preparedness to conduct the August 15 governorship election in strict compliance with the Electoral Act and relevant guidelines.
The 2026 Osun State Governorship Election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 15, 2026, as political parties prepare to formally open their campaigns in the coming days.
