Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s former Vice President, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing irreconcilable differences with the party’s current trajectory.

He expressed his decision in a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman in Jada 1 Ward, Adamawa State.

Atiku in his belief said that the party has deviated from its foundational principles. He cited significant disagreements within the party.

Reacting to this development, the PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, described Atiku’s departure as “good riddance to bad rubbish.”

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary attributed the PDP’s loss in the 2023 presidential election to Atiku’s negligence, stating he failed to mobilize necessary support and allowed key party leaders to defect or disengage.

There’s speculation about Atiku’s potential involvement with the African Democratic Congress-led coalition for the 2027 presidential election.

Abdullahi mentioned Atiku’s ongoing interest in pursuing the presidency, but noted the PDP won’t easily grant him the ticket for a third consecutive term.
