Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his loyalists shunned Saturday’s local government elections, raising fresh questions about his political comeback ahead of the September 18 expiration of the state of emergency.

While Fubara was reportedly in London, his allies, including top aides and sacked council chairmen, also stayed away from the polls.

The election, dominated by the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the influence of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, saw the party secure 20 chairmanship seats, with the PDP allotted three.

Wike expressed confidence that Fubara would return as governor once the emergency rule lapses, citing improved stability in the state.

However, voter apathy, delayed materials, and absence of the BVAS device marred the exercise in several LGAs.

Legal voices insist Fubara, as an elected governor, should be reinstated to complete his mandate, but his camp remains tight-lipped until the emergency period ends.
