A Finnish court has sentenced Nigerian-born activist Simon Ekpa to six years in prison for terrorism-related offences.

The Päijät-Häme District Court found the 40-year-old guilty of participating in terrorist organisations, inciting crimes with terrorist intent, aggravated tax fraud, and violating Finland’s Lawyers Act.

Between 2021 and 2024, Ekpa was accused of exploiting social media to push for Biafra’s secession, allegedly funding and arming militant groups in Nigeria.

Despite denying the charges, the court ruled that his broadcasts and online influence played a central role in organising and inciting violence.

Ekpa, a former Lahti municipal councillor, was arrested in December 2024 after a 12-session trial, a three-judge panel unanimously upheld his conviction.
