The former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, on Tuesday appeared before a court following his arraignment by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over alleged corruption-related offences.
El-Rufai, who served as governor from 2015 to 2023, was brought before the court amid heightened public interest, with security operatives stationed within and around the court premises to maintain order during proceedings.
The anti-corruption agency is said to have filed charges bordering on alleged abuse of office and financial misconduct. Details of the charges were presented during the arraignment, as the prosecution outlined its case against the former governor.
During the court session, El-Rufai’s legal team entered a plea on his behalf, while also indicating readiness to contest the allegations. The defence counsel urged the court to grant bail on liberal terms, emphasizing their client’s willingness to cooperate with the judicial process.
However, Counsel to the ICPC, maintained that the charges were backed by substantial evidence and called for due diligence in handling the matter.
After listening to submissions from both parties, the presiding judge adjourned the case to March 31, 2026, for further hearing.
El-Rufai was seen leaving the courtroom shortly after the proceedings, surrounded by aides and security personnel.
The development marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s ongoing anti-corruption efforts, as the ICPC continues to pursue high-profile cases involving former public office holders. Further updates are expected as the case resumes later this month.
