Nigeria’s Deaf Super Eagles have won the 13th West African Deaf Football Championship, defeating the Scorpions of Gambia in a tense final at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The victory secures Nigeria’s seventh title in the history of the regional competition.
The week-long tournament, organized by the Nigeria Deaf Football Association in collaboration with the West African Deaf Sports Federation and supported by ECOWAS, featured teams from Gambia, Niger Republic, Liberia, and other West African nations.
The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, praised the team for what he described as a “historic and unifying triumph,” urging greater investment in sports for persons with disabilities.
“This victory is a source of pride for Nigeria and a testament to the talent and resilience of our deaf athletes,” Gufwan said in his congratulatory message.
Nigeria, which hosted the championship for the first time, has now consolidated its dominance in deaf football across West Africa. Analysts say the triumph not only highlights sporting excellence but also reinforces calls for more inclusive opportunities for persons with disabilities.
