The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has joined the global community to commemorate the 2025 International Week of the Deaf, celebrated under the theme: “With Deaf People, We Can Achieve.”

Speaking on the significance of the week, the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, described the observance as a reminder of the resilience, creativity, and contributions of deaf persons to society.

“The International Week of the Deaf is not just a celebration; it is a powerful reminder of the resilience, creativity, and contributions of deaf persons to our society. At NCPWD, we are committed to promoting accessible communication, enforcing the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, and ensuring that deaf persons have equal opportunities to thrive,” Gufwan said.

According to the Press Release, signed by the Head Media Publicity, Mr. Ishaku Kigbu(naipr,) the Commission has rolled out initiatives to foster inclusivity for deaf persons, including the promotion of sign language interpretation in public institutions, nationwide awareness campaigns, training of interpreters, and strategic partnerships with disability organizations to break barriers in communication, education, employment, and civic participation.

The Commission also called on government agencies, private organizations, civil society groups, the media, and the general public to use the week as a moment of solidarity and action, stressing that inclusivity and accessibility must become guaranteed rights, not privileges.

With this year’s commemoration, NCPWD reaffirmed its vision of an inclusive Nigeria where deaf persons and all persons with disabilities can participate fully and equally in nation-building.
