The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has made a groundbreaking move to promote inclusivity in national security by training over 250 personnel in basic sign language.
This initiative, held at the Command Headquarters in Abuja on July 16, 2025, aims to bridge communication gaps between security operatives and the deaf community.
The NSCDC’s training program is designed to ensure that every citizen, regardless of their ability, feels a sense of safety and belonging. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in advancing inclusive security within the Federal Capital Territory.
The training is considered a bold and structured effort to bridge the gap between state protection and the deaf community, which has long been invisible in the eyes of the system.
The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has pledged to support the NSCDC with technical assistance, capacity building, and strategic partnerships to strengthen the inclusion agenda.
The program has restored trust, affirmed dignity, and created a bridge between the security agency and the deaf community.
The graduates pledged to actively support the enforcement of the law and promote accessibility and inclusion in their respective domains.
NCPWD’s Executive Secretary, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, called on the NSCDC to employ trained deaf individuals and give full effect to the 5% employment quota for persons with disabilities, as stipulated in the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.
