Bukar Dalori has taken over as the acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje on Friday.
Ganduje’s resignation has sparked speculation about the reasons behind his decision, with some sources suggesting it may be linked to internal political realignments, particularly with the 2027 general elections in view.
One source indicates that Ganduje’s resignation might be connected to ongoing permutations around the vice-presidential slot, with increasing pressure to zone it to the North-West, Ganduje’s region. If the vice-presidential ticket is retained in the Northwest, the party chairmanship might have to shift elsewhere, as the APC had originally zoned the national chairmanship to the North-Central.
Others suggest that cracks within the party, discontent among northern stakeholders, questions over his leadership style, and concerns about internal consistency might have contributed to growing frustration with his chairmanship.
Dalori, who holds the northern portfolio as Deputy National Chairman, will act as the National Chairman until the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting is convened to formally address the leadership vacancy.
President Bola Tinubu has directed Dalori to urgently convene a meeting of the party’s NEC to discuss the leadership vacuum.
Insiders say former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, is a leading contender to fill the vacancy created by Ganduje’s resignation.
