The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State Chapter, under the leadership of Hon. Samuel Idowu Abiodun, has dismissed claims by a rival group parading as ALGON leaders, describing them as impostors, sponsored by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
This was made known in a statement on Friday, 5th September, 2025. Abiodun insisted that the group, which has been promoted in some media outlets, lacks any legal recognition. He maintained that the authentic ALGON in Osun remains the body of duly elected All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen, whose mandate was validated by the Akure Appeal Court judgment of February 10, 2025.
“The so-called PDP ALGON has no legal foundation. Their claims are built on propaganda and political sponsorship, not on any valid election or recognition,” Abiodun reiterated.
According to him, the National ALGON Secretariat, through an official letter dated March 17, 2025, recognizes him as the only legitimate ALGON Chairman in Osun State; he therefore criticized what he described as attempts by the PDP government in Osun and its allies to undermine local government autonomy, arguing that the APC-led ALGON had fulfilled all statutory requirements to function as the valid council leadership, noting that their efforts are aimed at ensuring direct access to local government funds free from state government manipulation.
“It is laughable that the same PDP that has consistently denied local governments in Osun State their constitutional rights to autonomy is now pretending to be a defender of the people’s funds,” he stated.
Abiodun also defended the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) against accusations over allocations, urging the public to seek clarifications from regulatory institutions instead of spreading “baseless allegations.”
Reaffirming his leadership, ALGON Chairman said: “We remain the only lawful ALGON in Osun State, duly recognized at the national level. We shall continue to defend the mandate freely given to us and protect the constitutional rights of local governments in Osun State.”
He called on general public to disregard what he described as “reckless and illegal claims of PDP impostors,” assuring that his leadership is committed to transparency, accountability, and true local government autonomy.
