World record holder, Tobi Amusan, has delivered Nigeria’s first medal at the ongoing 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, after storming to a silver finish in the women’s 100m hurdles on Monday.
She clocked 12.29 seconds, finishing just behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who struck gold with a new national record. The bronze medal went to Grace Stark of the United States with a time of 12.34 seconds.
The race also saw strong performances from Masai Russell of the U.S., who narrowly missed the podium in fourth place (12.44s), while Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska and Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton tied for fifth with season-best times of 12.49s. Jamaica’s Danielle Williams placed seventh (12.53s), and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands wrapped up the final in 12.56s.
Amusan, who holds the world record of 12.12 seconds set in 2022, has remained one of the most consistent hurdlers in global athletics over the last three years. The silver medal adds to her growing legacy and reaffirms her status as Nigeria’s brightest star on the international track scene.
