Fresh controversy has enveloped former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), following reports that arms and ammunition were discovered at his private residence in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, prompting a full-scale investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to multiple media reports, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) uncovered the alleged cache during a search linked to ongoing financial crime investigations involving the former minister. Given that the investigation of illegal firearms falls outside the EFCC’s statutory mandate, the items were reportedly handed over to the DSS for further scrutiny.

Security sources cited in the reports disclosed that the quantity and nature of the arms raised serious national security concerns, necessitating the intervention of the country’s domestic intelligence agency. The DSS is said to have opened a separate and comprehensive probe to determine the origin, legality, and intended use of the weapons.

The development adds a new dimension to Malami’s legal troubles. The former AGF is already facing allegations bordering on money laundering, involving him and members of his immediate family, as well as interim forfeiture orders on dozens of luxury properties allegedly linked to proceeds of crime.

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued by Malami, the EFCC, or the DSS confirming details of the alleged arms discovery or outlining possible charges. Investigations are ongoing, and no court has yet made any findings on the matter.

The unfolding situation has sparked widespread public debate, given Malami’s former role as Nigeria’s chief law officer and the country’s ongoing struggle with insecurity, banditry, and terrorism. Analysts say the case underscores growing public demand for accountability among political elites.

Authorities have urged Nigerians to avoid speculation while security agencies conclude their investigations. Further developments are expected in the coming days.
