The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is strongly opposing the proposed salary increases for Nigeria’s top political office holders, including the President, Vice President, governors, and Senate President.

The party describes this move as “tone-deaf” and an “all-out affront to the Nigerian people” considering millions of Nigerians are struggling with inflation, rising fuel costs, and an inadequate minimum wage of N70,000 per month.

ADC argues that proposing salary increases for political office holders at a time when ordinary Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship shows a disconnect from the people’s struggles.

According to the party, political office holders already receive substantial allowances and perks beyond their salaries, enabling a lifestyle of luxury.

The party calls for the suspension of the plan, emphasizing that government policies should focus on improving lives of ordinary Nigerians, raising the minimum wage, ensuring fair salaries for civil servants, and strengthening social welfare programs.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) is constitutionally mandated to review salaries of political office holders.

The Chairman of RMAFC, Mohammed Shehu argues that current salaries are “inadequate, unrealistic, and outdated” given the responsibilities and economic challenges.
