The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has firmly dispelled reports suggesting that its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme has been suspended or discontinued, describing such claims as false, misleading and entirely unfounded.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, February 4, 2026, the University clarified that its medical programme remains fully operational and in good standing, stressing that only admission into the MBBS programme for the 2026/2027 academic session has been suspended, and strictly for one session.
According to FUTA, the temporary suspension of admission is a strategic academic decision aimed at ensuring a seamless academic calendar and facilitating hitch-free clinical training for students currently enrolled in the programme.
“The MBBS programme of the Federal University of Technology, Akure is up and running and has not been suspended or put in abeyance in any way or form,” the University stated.
The management further explained that the pause in admission should not be misconstrued as a discontinuation of the programme, emphasizing that clinical training for existing students is ongoing without disruption. The FUTA College of Health Sciences, the statement noted, continues to work closely with the FUTA Teaching Hospital to guarantee smooth and effective clinical exposure for medical students.
The University condemned insinuations suggesting otherwise, noting that such narratives do not reflect the reality on ground and only serve to misinform the public.
FUTA also expressed deep appreciation to key stakeholders whose support was instrumental to the establishment of the FUTA Teaching Hospital, a critical component of its medical training ecosystem. These include President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; the Ondo State Government under Governor Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa; the Minister of Health, Professor Mohammed Ali Pate; the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba (Dr) Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (CFR); elder statesman, Pa Reuben Fasoranti; the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka; and other members of the FUTA Akure partnership.
Reaffirming its mandate, the University stated that it remains committed to the training and production of critical manpower for national development and well-being through its medical and health-related programmes.
The statement was signed by Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo, Director, Corporate Communication and Protocol, FUTA.
