The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has joined the global community to mark World Spinal Cord Injury Day, with an appeal  for stronger support systems, inclusive policies, and collective action to improve the lives of persons living with spinal cord injuries.

This year’s commemoration, titled “Turning Challenges into Strength”, highlights the resilience of millions of people who, despite living with spinal cord injuries, continue to rise above daily challenges with courage and dignity.

The significance of the day according to the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, is the need to shift focus from limitations to the strength and contributions of survivors.

“Spinal cord injuries change lives in an instant, but they do not erase dreams, dignity, or potential. Behind every statistic is a human story, a son, a daughter, a parent who deserves every chance to live fully and thrive. At NCPWD, we reaffirm our commitment to breaking barriers, challenging stigma, and building a Nigeria where no person with a spinal cord injury is left behind.” he said.

Gufuwan called on government agencies, private organizations, medical professionals, and civil society to collaborate in expanding access to rehabilitation services, mobility aids, emergency care, and employment opportunities for survivors.

According to the NCPWD Boss,, thousands of Nigerians suffer spinal cord injuries annually, often caused by road accidents, falls, and violence. However, with timely intervention, rehabilitation, and inclusive policies, many can lead fulfilling and productive lives.

He emphasized that prevention and care for spinal cord injuries go beyond medical issues, framing them as matters of human rights, inclusion, and national development.

As the world commemorates the day, Hon. Gufuwan urged Nigerians to stand in solidarity with survivors, celebrate their resilience, and work collectively towards a society that guarantees dignity, accessibility, and equal opportunities for all.
