Federal University Lafia Wins Praise for Championing Inclusive Education

 

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, has hailed the Federal University, Lafia (FULafia), for its groundbreaking commitment to inclusive education and the empowerment of students with disabilities.

Gufwan described the institution’s disability-friendly initiatives as a “remarkable standard for higher education in Nigeria,” noting that the policies have opened doors of opportunity for students with special needs to access and excel in academics.

Amongst the initiatives lauded by the Commission are a 75% subsidy on school fees, a 2% admission quota for students with disabilities. The establishment of a Centre for Disability Studies, special hostel allocations, and regular engagement with students with special needs, saying that these measures are not only reduce financial and social barriers but also ensure dignity, comfort, and equal opportunity on campus.

“These bold steps are in line with the National Policy on Inclusive Education (2024 Revised) and reflect Nigeria’s national goals of social inclusion and poverty reduction. Federal University Lafia is a beacon of hope for other institutions to emulate,” he said.

The NCPWD boss further urged the Vice-Chancellor of the University to serve as an ambassador in promoting inclusive education across Nigerian universities, while assuring that the Commission is ready to deepen collaboration with the institution to sustain and expand its efforts.
