The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to speculations about the possibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan contesting in the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement issued on Friday, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, said Jonathan’s potential return to the race would face both constitutional and political hurdles.

Oladejo noted that while Jonathan is respected for overseeing Nigeria’s first peaceful transfer of power in 2015, his administration between 2010 and 2015 had challenges in governance, including economic and security concerns, adding that revisiting past leadership, in the party’s view, would not address the current needs of the country.

He also raised questions about the former president’s political alignment, citing his engagements across party lines and limited involvement in the Peoples Democratic Party’s rebuilding process.

The APC spokesman maintained that the APC intends to continue pursuing reforms and presenting candidates that reflect the aspirations of younger Nigerians.

“Former President Jonathan remains a respected elder statesman, but legacies are not manifestoes,” Oladejo stated, while urging citizens to prioritize capable and forward-looking leadership as the 2027 elections draw closer.

The party, however, acknowledged Jonathan’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process, particularly his decision in 2015 to concede defeat, which attracted international commendation.
