The 59th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) recently took place in Enugu, with prominent dignitaries in attendance. The event highlighted the importance of geospatial intelligence in global development and its potential to drive socioeconomic growth in Nigeria.
Prof. Chinedu Nebo emphasized the transformative power of geospatial intelligence, integrating geographic data with cutting-edge technologies like AI, machine learning, and remote sensing.
The conference theme, “Harnessing Geospatial Intelligence in the New World: Innovation and Opportunities for Sustainable Development,” underscored the role of geospatial intelligence in achieving sustainable development and national progress.
NIS President Surv. Dr. Matthew Olomolatan Ibitoye advocated for establishing a coordinated National Geospatial Data Infrastructure to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s seven-point agenda, particularly in infrastructural development ¹
Surveyor General of the Federation, Surv. Abduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin, represented by Surv. Semiu Ayinde, highlighted the office’s commitment to embracing new technology for improved surveying and mapping.
The Governor of Enugu State emphasized the importance of surveyors in shaping the future of the environment, development, and national planning system. He also showcased the state’s achievements in strengthening survey institutions and investing in technology.
Prof. Chinedu Nebo,the Vice Chancellor of the University of the Nigeria, emphasized the need for policymakers to recognize the importance of geospatial intelligence and experts in this field for sustainable development.
The state has set up 60 smart green schools in every ward, leveraging its mapping system to transform education.
The state has also invested in farm estates and security infrastructure, demonstrating the impact of its mapping system on development.
Enugu State recently launched a Continuously Operating Reference System (CORS) network, enhancing surveying accuracy and quality.
