President Bola Tinubu has called for a major overhaul of global governance, finance, and healthcare systems to benefit emerging economies, particularly in Africa.

Speaking at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Tinubu emphasized the need for a more inclusive and equitable framework that addresses the unique challenges faced by low-income countries.

Tinubu advocates for restructuring global institutions and economic architecture to reduce disparities and promote fairness.

Africa contributes the least to global emissions but suffers the most, highlighting the need for climate justice and sustainable development.

The President emphasized the importance of universal health coverage and addressing non-communicable diseases as a shared global health burden.

Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to collaborating with other emerging economies to achieve sustainable and inclusive development.

However, Tinubu’s call for global reform faces potential challenges, including: President Donald Trump has threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on countries supporting BRICS’ positions, which could impact Nigeria’s trade relations with the US.

Analysts warn that such tariffs could erode competitiveness, suppress foreign-exchange inflows, and exacerbate inflation in Nigeria.

In response to these developments, Nigeria’s foreign policy remains non-aligned and pragmatic, with the country engaging in global trade platforms while safeguarding bilateral relationships.
